The Ridge Student Ministry
Current Series:
The Book of Acts
The Bible describes the community of Christians as the body of Christ. This community is what we know today as the Church. However, this does not mean that the body of Christ is limited to the four walls of the physical building(s) of churches. The Church is an eclectic community of sinners that have placed their faith in Christ alone for salvation. This means that the Church is a community of Christians who glorify God and this is their purpose. This same community of Christians are called to make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). However, when we look at the Church today something is wrong. John Dickerson says in The Great Evangelical Recession, “We are losing the people we have.” He continues, “If the church is the body of Christ, then that body is bleeding out” (98). The problem the church faces today is that many Christians are not making disciples. They are not doing what Christ commanded them to do in the Great Commission, “…to make disciples…” (Matthew 28:19).
If the problem that the church faces today is that they are not making disciples, then there are one or two roots to this problem; (1) Christian’s are not making disciples, or (2) Christians do not know how to make disciples. Regardless, Christians need to make disciples. Because of this, the book of Acts gives Christians a great example to follow. the contents of Acts show us what the earliest Christians devoted themselves to, how they handled specific questions, and why they did the things they did. Therefore, the student ministry will be spending all of 2021 following God’s big story through the early church’s example in the book of Acts. We will do this while also training ourselves to share the Gospel and make Christ known in Hueytown and those we are around.
